Prof Loh Wai Lam joined NUS in 2006 as an Associate Professor of Practise at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in NUS, after spending more than 16 years in the UK for several Oil & Gas and related companies since 1990, in the capacities of Senior Project Engineer, Project Manager, Consultant and Head of R&D. During this time, he has led and managed numerous multi-disciplinary consortium industrial R&D projects for the Oil & Gas Industry relating to Offshore Oil & Gas production, subsea processing and transportation, etc. Prof Loh is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He is also the Programme Manager (Subsea Systems and Transportation) for the Centre of Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE).

Acoustic positioning is the cornerstone of subsea navigation, enabling the precise real-time tracking of underwater assets where GPS signals cannot penetrate. This technology relies on a network of acoustic transponders deployed on the seafloor or mounted on a surface vessel. These transponders communicate with transducers on vessels, ROVs, and structures, measuring the time-of-flight of sound waves to calculate ranges and, through triangulation, determine a 3D position. It is indispensable for key construction activities such as the installation of manifolds and templates, pipeline touchdown monitoring, and the guidance of ROVs during critical intervention work. However, the system's accuracy is challenged by environmental variables like water temperature, salinity, and the geometry of the transponder array. Effective acoustic positioning requires careful calibration and modeling of sound velocity profiles to mitigate errors, ensuring that subsea construction and survey operations are executed with the millimeter-to-meter-level precision demanded for a successful project.
